Michael Benya

Michael B. Benya, 75, of Ottawa, passed away peacefully on the family farm on September 24, 2026.

A private Mass will be held for Michael at St. Columba Church and burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.

Michael was born on April 4, 1951, in LaSalle, the son of John and Elizabeth (Ernat) Benya. Michael graduated from Marquette High School and attended IVCC. Michael was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. He worked for Owens Illinois in Streator and retired after 25 years of service. Michael loved music and enjoyed playing the guitar. He was a herbologist and enjoyed gardening and growing many different types of plants and herbs. Michael was known for his homemade pizzas. It was not uncommon for him to show up unannounced at the farm with his homemade pizzas or doughnuts from Steve's Bakery. He and his family also enjoyed making trips and eating at Rips. Michael also enjoyed and was very talented at art. He enjoyed drawing and painting pictures. Most of all, Michael loved his family and he will be deeply missed.

Michael is survived by his sister, Joan Bernabei; nephews, Mark (Jessica) and Matt (Beth) Bernabei; great nephews, Joe and Mario Bernabei; great nieces, Lilliana, Ella, and Margaret Bernabei; and his caretaker, Sheri Higgins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Marilyn Irmis.
