Michael "Mike" Hicks, 63 of Ottawa, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, November 28, 2025.
Mike was born on May 28, 1962 to Clifton and Catherine (Kate) Hicks. Mike, or Coach as he was known, was a beloved son, brother, uncle, great-uncle, coach and friend. If you had the privilege of knowing him, you would understand his devotion to family and friends. His passing will leave a void in the hearts of his family and many more whose lives were touched by him.
Mike had many professions throughout his life. From his early days as a paper boy to working at the YMCA and eventually starting his unbelievable basketball career. Coaching basketball was his true calling, beginning with the YMCA Youth Basketball Program, to Wallace, Midland, LaMoille, and Peru Washington. From there he took an Athletic Director position at St. Anne's which led him to St. Mary's, St. Viator, ending with Providence Catholic in New Lenox. He retired in 2023 with an over 30 year coaching career.
He retired to follow his great-nephew play ball at Marquette High School. Mike still had that desire to help and became Marquette's Freshman coach which allowed him to again share his knowledge and insights of the game. The countless hours he spent umpiring and coaching truly defined his love of sports. He also had a passion for tennis. If Jefferson School's bricks could talk, they would share the many hours he spent hitting them! Mike credits his late Uncle Dick for his early passions of watching, keeping score and playing all sports. His knowledge is second to none. The amount of books he read on a variety of topics is a tribute to that.
We are both thankful and blessed to him for the role he took in caring for our mom. She never had to worry about laundry, cooking or going to the store. He always made sure she had her juice, Sprite, and bananas. He spoiled her! Mike will be remembered as "Uncle Santa." His use of scotch tape while wrapping is his trademark. Mike also took an active role in raising and supporting his nieces and nephews along with his great nieces and nephews.
Mike is survived by his mom, his siblings Steve (Julie) Hicks, Kathy (Al) Mattes and Laurie (Donna) Hicks. Nieces Erica, Michelle, Lacey, Brandi, Stephanie, Lauren and Abby and nephews Zach and TJ. He also had 17 great nieces and nephews. He also shared special bonds with all of our "furry" pets.
He is preceded in death by his dad, his brothers Terry (in infancy), Tim and Danny.
From siblings - thanks, Mike, for all the childhood memories. There were lots. To his many players and coaches - thanks for making Mike happy. Please continue to honor him by remembering his passion and devotion to the athletes as well as how to play with pride.
Per Mike's wishes, there are no formal services. Memorials can be made to his family.
"Beloved: The time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith."
Rest in eternal peace, Coach Mike.
